Neck Pain
Chronic neck pain is one of the most common and disabling musculoskeletal conditions in the world — and one of the most undertreated. At Revolve, we identify and address the structural, neurological, and systemic factors driving your pain rather than simply managing symptoms.
Understanding Neck Pain
Neck pain is the fourth leading cause of disability globally, affecting nearly 50% of adults at some point in their lives. It ranges from acute stiffness and muscle tension to chronic, debilitating pain that radiates into the shoulders, arms, and hands — significantly impacting quality of life, work productivity, and sleep.
The cervical spine consists of seven vertebrae (C1–C7) that house and protect the spinal cord, support the weight of the head, and allow a remarkable range of motion. When any of these structures — the discs, joints, muscles, ligaments, or nerves — become irritated, compressed, or dysfunctional, the result is pain. What makes neck pain particularly complex is that the cervical spine also directly influences brain function, proprioception, and the autonomic nervous system — meaning chronic neck pain rarely stops at the neck.
At Revolve Integrative Health, we take a root-cause approach to neck pain. Rather than prescribing pain management, we identify the exact structural and neurological drivers of your symptoms and build a targeted care plan to correct them.
Common Causes
Cervical Disc Herniation
A damaged or herniated disc in the cervical spine can press on adjacent nerve roots, causing local neck pain, radiating arm pain, numbness, or weakness.
Cervical Facet Syndrome
Degeneration or irritation of the small facet joints between vertebrae — a common source of deep, achy neck pain that worsens with rotation or extension.
Muscle Tension & Trigger Points
Chronic tightness in the upper trapezius, levator scapulae, and deep cervical muscles — often driven by poor posture, stress, or repetitive strain — creates persistent neck pain and referred headaches.
Forward Head Posture
For every inch the head shifts forward from neutral, the effective load on the cervical spine increases by approximately 10 lbs. Chronic forward head posture accelerates disc degeneration and compresses cervical nerves.
Whiplash & Trauma
Rapid acceleration-deceleration injuries — from car accidents, falls, or sports — damage ligaments, discs, and muscles in the cervical spine, often producing symptoms that persist for months or years without proper treatment.
Cervical Stenosis
Narrowing of the spinal canal or nerve exit points in the cervical spine due to bone spurs, disc bulges, or ligament thickening — compressing the spinal cord or nerve roots and producing pain, weakness, and coordination problems.
Symptoms
Neck stiffness & limited range of motion
Sharp or aching pain in the neck
Pain radiating into shoulders or arms
Numbness or tingling in hands
Headaches originating at the base of skull
Muscle weakness in arms or hands
Pain that worsens with prolonged sitting
Clicking or grinding with neck movement
Dizziness or balance problems
What the Research Says
Evidence-Based Findings on Neck Pain Treatment
Spinal manipulation is endorsed for neck pain by 100% of clinical practice guidelines. An extensive review of 33 clinical practice guidelines spanning 50 years found that 100% of guidelines favored spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) for neck pain — a stronger endorsement than for any other condition reviewed. (Trager et al., Journal of Clinical Medicine, September 2024.)
Chiropractic care outperforms medication for chronic neck pain. A randomized clinical trial published in Annals of Internal Medicine found that spinal manipulation was significantly more effective than medication for both short-term and long-term relief of acute and subacute neck pain — without the side effects or dependency risks associated with pharmacological treatment.
Neck pain disrupts central nervous system processing. Research shows that chronic neck pain creates a disturbance in proprioceptive input to the central nervous system, negatively affecting how the brain processes sensory information over time. This neurological component explains why untreated chronic neck pain often leads to broader symptoms — including headaches, brain fog, dizziness, and poor coordination — and why treatment that addresses nervous system function produces superior outcomes.
Multimodal care produces the best outcomes. Research consistently shows that combining spinal manipulation with soft tissue therapy, corrective exercise, and nervous system rehabilitation produces significantly better long-term outcomes than any single intervention alone.
How We Treat Neck Pain at Revolve
Chiropractic Adjustments
Precise, targeted cervical adjustments to restore normal joint motion, reduce nerve pressure, and correct vertebral misalignment — the foundation of structural neck pain treatment. Learn more →
Myofascial Therapy
Targeted release of the upper trapezius, levator scapulae, suboccipital muscles, and cervical fascia — addressing the soft tissue component that often perpetuates pain even after structural correction. Learn more →
Frequency Specific Microcurrent
FSM targets nerve inflammation, disc injury, and scar tissue in the cervical spine at a cellular level — reducing inflammation and accelerating tissue repair in structures that don't respond to manual therapy alone. Learn more →
Corrective Rehabilitation
Addressing the postural patterns, muscle imbalances, and movement dysfunctions that created the problem — rebuilding cervical stability so results last and recurrence is prevented. Learn more →
Spinal Decompression
For cervical disc herniations and nerve compression, gentle mechanical traction creates negative intradiscal pressure — allowing disc material to retract and relieving direct pressure on compressed nerve roots. Learn more →
Photobiomodulation
Near-infrared light penetrates deep into cervical tissue to reduce neuroinflammation, stimulate collagen synthesis in damaged discs and ligaments, and support nerve regeneration. Learn more →
