Knee Decompression
Therapy

A non-surgical, non-invasive treatment that uses gentle mechanical traction to unload the knee joint, restore joint space, improve fluid circulation, and support natural healing — without drugs, injections, or surgery.

What is Knee Decompression?

Knee decompression therapy uses a specialized chair-based device that isolates the knee joint and applies gentle, calibrated mechanical traction to separate the femur (thigh bone) from the tibia (shin bone). This creates a slight vacuum effect inside the joint, drawing nutrient-rich synovial fluid into the space, reducing pressure on damaged cartilage and nerve endings, and stretching the surrounding tendons, ligaments, and soft tissue.

Unlike treatments that simply mask pain, mechanical knee decompression addresses the structural reality of what is happening inside a compressed, degenerated, or injured knee — and creates the conditions for the joint to heal. Most patients notice relief within the first few sessions. Results are cumulative and generally enduring.

At Revolve Integrative Health, knee decompression is integrated into a whole-body care plan that also addresses the hidden root causes of chronic knee pain — including systemic inflammation, blood sugar dysregulation, gut health, and lumbar spine dysfunction — because lasting knee recovery requires more than treating the joint in isolation.

The 4 Stages of Knee Degeneration

Stage 1

Intermittent Pain

Pain with activity. Early cartilage damage and joint space narrowing begin.

Stage 2

Constant Discomfort

Pain becomes more persistent as cartilage damage and inflammation increase.

Stage 3

Intensified Pain

Pain significantly worsens and begins affecting daily activities as cartilage continues to wear.

Stage 4

Loss of Function

Severe limitation, often bone-on-bone, making joint replacement a common consideration.

Hidden Root Causes of Chronic Knee Pain

Systemic Inflammation

Chronic inflammation elevates inflammatory cytokines throughout the body that contribute to ongoing joint pain and cartilage breakdown — even when the knee itself hasn't been directly injured.

Blood Sugar & AGEs

High blood sugar increases harmful advanced glycation end products (AGEs) that accumulate in joint tissue, accelerating cartilage damage and stiffness over time.

Gut Imbalance

Poor gut health can produce toxins that enter the bloodstream and drive joint inflammation. An unhealthy gut disrupts the brain-gut-vagus nerve axis, directly impacting how the body manages pain and healing.

Lumbar Nerve Dysfunction

The lower lumbar nerves (L3–L5) directly innervate the knee. When these nerves are irritated or compressed at the spine, they can cause knee pain, weakness, and instability — even without any injury to the knee itself.

How Knee Decompression Works

Mechanism of Joint Decompression

Joint decompression & pressure relief. By gently separating the femur and tibia, the decompression device creates space inside the joint. This immediately reduces pressure on worn cartilage, irritated meniscus tissue, and nerve endings. For many patients, pain begins to ease during the very first session because the knee is no longer under constant compression.

Synovial fluid circulation. Knee cartilage has no direct blood supply — it relies entirely on the movement of synovial fluid to receive oxygen, nutrients, and hydration. Chronic compression and degeneration impair this process. The vacuum effect created by decompression stimulates synovial fluid to flow back into the joint space, lubricating the joint, reducing stiffness, and delivering the raw materials needed for cartilage repair.

Soft tissue stretching & adhesion release. Traction gently stretches the tendons, ligaments, and soft tissue surrounding the knee. Over time this releases adhesions and scar tissue that restrict mobility and contribute to pain — restoring a more natural range of motion and joint mechanics.

Osteogenesis & angiogenesis. Research on mechanical traction has documented its ability to stimulate new bone growth (osteogenesis), improve blood supply to the area (angiogenesis), and enhance the viscoelastic properties of joint tissue — all of which contribute to long-term structural improvement in the knee.

What to Expect

Comfortable & Seated

You sit comfortably in a specialized decompression chair with your leg secured in the device. A strap is placed over the upper thigh and a cuff just below the knee. The device then applies gentle, calibrated traction. Most patients feel immediate relief as the joint separates.

Fast Sessions

Each session typically takes 10–15 minutes. The traction force is programmed specifically to your condition and tolerance. Treatments are generally performed several times per week during the active phase of care.

Fast-Acting Results

Most patients notice a positive response within the first 1–3 sessions. Many patients who walk in with a significant limp walk out noticeably improved. Results build cumulatively over the course of treatment.

Whole-Body Approach

At Revolve, knee decompression is combined with photobiomodulation, FSM, and chiropractic care to address inflammation, nerve function, and joint mechanics simultaneously for superior outcomes.
