Long COVID
Long COVID affects an estimated 65 million people worldwide. At Revolve, we address the multi-system biological drivers behind persistent COVID symptoms — not just the symptoms themselves.
Understanding Long COVID
Long COVID — also known as Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC) — is defined by the persistence of symptoms for more than 12 weeks after the acute COVID-19 infection, in the absence of an alternative explanation. It affects an estimated 10% of COVID-19 patients globally — totaling approximately 65 million people worldwide — and produces a wide range of debilitating symptoms that significantly impair daily functioning.
The underlying biology of Long COVID is increasingly understood to involve multiple converging mechanisms: SARS-CoV-2 viral persistence, EBV reactivation, immune dysregulation, mitochondrial dysfunction, microbiome disruption, autonomic nervous system dysfunction, and micro-clotting in small blood vessels. This multi-system pathology explains why Long COVID produces such a wide and seemingly disconnected array of symptoms — and why single-targeted treatment consistently falls short.
At Revolve Integrative Health, we investigate the full range of Long COVID mechanisms through comprehensive functional testing and build individualized recovery plans that address viral persistence, immune dysregulation, nervous system dysfunction, and cellular energy failure simultaneously.
Key Biological Mechanisms
Viral Persistence
SARS-CoV-2 viral reservoirs in gut tissue, lymph nodes, and other organs continue to trigger immune activation long after the acute infection resolves — sustaining inflammation and systemic symptoms.
EBV Reactivation
Research confirms that COVID-19-triggered EBV reactivation during acute infection predicts Long COVID onset. Many Long COVID symptoms are driven by EBV rather than SARS-CoV-2 itself.
Immune Dysregulation
Long COVID produces persistent immune abnormalities — including elevated inflammatory cytokines, T-cell exhaustion, and autoantibody production — that drive ongoing symptoms and impair recovery.
Mitochondrial Dysfunction
SARS-CoV-2 and EBV both impair mitochondrial function and attack DNA repair mechanisms. The resulting cellular energy deficit produces the post-exertional malaise and profound fatigue characteristic of Long COVID.
Autonomic Dysfunction
Long COVID frequently produces POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) and autonomic nervous system dysregulation — causing heart rate abnormalities, dizziness, and exercise intolerance.
Gut Microbiome Disruption
COVID-19 significantly disrupts the gut microbiome, reducing beneficial bacterial diversity and increasing intestinal permeability — sustaining systemic inflammation and impairing the gut-brain axis for months after infection.

Persistent fatigue & PEM
Brain fog & cognitive impairment
Shortness of breath
Heart palpitations
Joint & muscle pain
Sleep disturbances
Headaches
